Dev log #5: The Community Discord Server

My name is Kristoffer (aka. HappyNeedo) and I’m the Community Manager at Evil Tortilla Games. About a year ago we created the official Community Discord server for Who’s Your Daddy?! and just recently the server reached 10.000 members. It’s been an amazing journey and we all loved following the community grow and take its shape.

In celebration of the 10k members and almost 1 year anniversary I’ve asked the developers a few questions about their view on the Community Discord.

Q: In general, what do you like the most about the Community Discord?

Josh: “I like how the Community Discord helps determine the direction we should take the game. The polls and feedback help us decide what content and fixes we should prioritize.”

Tony: “I think it's a great way for the community to continue to discuss the game and just hang out. It can help people find new friends to play Who's your Daddy or people to just talk to.”

Mathias: “Our amazing mod team 💪 They are the most dedicated parents in the world.”

Joe: “I find it really exciting to see how the community reacts to the game, especially after a big update. It really helps validate all the hard work we do getting to see players interact with all the new content. I like reading all the comments and pictures people post about the bugs and glitches in the game. I love seeing Mathias' face emoted whenever a player is talking about the music or a certain sound effect.”

Q: What have been your best experiences on our Community Discord?

Tony: “I think the suggestions and contests really help us branch out and bring Ideas that our development team probably wouldn't come up with on our own. It also helps balance our own ideas down to a more playable level for the player base.”

Mathias: “Interacting with our player base, and getting such awesome feedback. So many great ideas have come from the players!”

Joe: “Starting one in the first place! Kristoffer and the Mod team have made it really easy for us to use Discord, and I can't thank them enough! It has been really cool to see that there are still players interested in what we are doing! I'm super grateful to be here working on this game today, and the server has made it easier to get feedback and provide support for changes that need to be made”

Q: Which event/initiative did you like the most from our Community Discord?

Mathias: “The trumpet cover competition. That was freaking amazing.”

Joe: “I'm a big fan of the experimental branch. It's really helpful to see video/images about what bugs or changes concern players the most, and helps us pivot to make any final improvements needed before an update is released.”

Josh: “My favorite event on the Community Discord was the Item Event. It is fun watching the community vote on what should be in the game. We developers get to place votes as well!”

Q: How does the Discord Community help you in the development of WYD?

Mathias: “The community definitely keeps my motivation going, and even though I’m not as active as I would like to have the time for, people always seem excited to talk with us and share their experiences. I’m so happy about it!”

Joe: “The videos, screenshots, and real-time communication we have has enabled us to provide a much better support line for players. This is also largely thanks to all of our Mods who take the time to answer issues in these channels. The community has made it clear they want us to finish constructing the rest of the rooms, so that has definitely become a priority for us. There's also a lot of ideas posted! So many ideas...we try to read them all, a lot of them are great, and some make it into the game!”

Josh: “It can be challenging to test an online multiplayer game in a small dev team. The Discord Community helps us discover and fix bugs. We try to make a log of each bug-report shared and fix it by the next update. The experimental branch has been extremely helpful in fixing major issues before our updates go live.”

Q: Is there something else you would like to do for/on the Community Discord in the future?

Tony: “I'm not creative, but more giveaways and continued contests for ideas, they help us out as developers' tons.”

Mathias: “Be more active, and do a music stream for any upcoming composers that might lurk in the group!”

Joe: “I might like to develop an item while streaming on the server sometime and show off our dev process in a-little more in detail, while somehow enabling the community to offer input.”

Josh: “I'd like to be more active on the discord in the future. I have mostly been in the background reading through bug reports, Xbox feedback, and support tickets trying to fix issues when I can.”

A special thanks to everyone on our official Community Discord server! It’s been a joy reading your crazy ideas and suggestions while drinking my daily morning coffee for the past year. Can’t wait to enter yet another great year with more events, giveaways, dev-streams and much more!

Community Manager @ Evil Tortilla Games
