Dev log #2: The reworked vacuum

In our latest Who’s Your Daddy update we reworked the vacuum, making it stronger, more dangerous and even more fun. My name is Joe, or “thehumanidiot”, I’m one of the developers of Evil Tortilla Games and I’m going to take you through the idea behind the recent rework of the vacuum.

Why and what?

We felt that the daddy could use more control over the map. The new mechanics and the removal of the pickup ability (from the old Who’s Your Daddy) have made it much harder for daddies. We decided to use the vacuum as a re-imagined version of this control mechanic.

The big change is that the vacuum now sucks up items and babies. This allows the daddy to quickly remove many items at once, and keep the baby near him. We balanced this new power out by limiting the vacuum with a 10 second “charge”.

Players can recharge the vacuum by placing it within an outlet. The baby's best chance to remove the vacuum from play is to eat it while it is charging (Just like in real life). You may also notice that the vacuum now has colored lights that represent the charge level.

The development

Making the vacuum suck up items was really easy because our “Shards” are already technically items. We really just removed a block that was preventing the vacuum from sucking up all items. Getting it to suck up ragdolls was a whole different issue. At first, daddies and babies could vacuum themselves, which resulted in a ridiculous flailing mess.

The finished Vacuum

In the end, I feel really happy about the new changes to the vacuum. I think babies will now think twice when they see daddy holding a vacuum. We’ll be keeping an eye on how the players feel about these new changes. What do you think about the new vacuum?
